In a 7-0 decision Friday, the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) voted to reject an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for proposed aquarium fishing in West Hawaiʻi.
A preview of articles and images in the just-published issue of CORAL, The Reef & Marine Aquarium Magazine, January/February 2020.
This must-see documentary covers data and analysis of the sustainability of the aquarium fishery, recent advances in the culture of aquarium fish species, how fish are collected without damaging the reef, and the methods used to transport fish around the world.
Bills 24 and 318 will be considered; Aquarium trade experts say the passage of either of these bills could devastate the aquarium fishery and trade in West Hawaii. Close to 70% of the statewide aquarium catch is landed in West Hawaii, making it the largest aquarium fishery in the State.
PIJAC notes that there very little time to submit public testimony prior to hearings on bills which would ban the aquarium fish collection in Hawaii.
