Building upon recent successes with outplanting Acorpora palmata in the area, Fudemar and SECORE have committed to a large-scale restoration project. “More than four hectares (10 acres) of reef will be enhanced through coral seeding within the next three years.”
Dramatic, newly-compiled footage documents the bleaching, recovery, expansion, and decline of a fringing reef at the island of Vunavadra in Fiji over a 16-year timeframe. Does the increasing frequency of weather-related catastrophe warrant intensive reef restoration efforts in locations like this?
Coral reef restoration efforts are ramping up in Fiji. October 10th, 2020, is Fiji’s 50th anniversary of independence from British Colonial Rule. Celebrations include the launch of the One Million Coral Planting Project, an effort spearheaded by Walt Smith and the A.D.E. Project.
For the first time in Florida or Caribbean waters, restored massive corals were observed spawning.
Coral Guardian offers a training program, the Blue Center, dedicated to any project leader wishing to develop their own coral reef restoration project around the world.
