Fish May Be Key to Controlling Crown-Of-Thorns Starfish Populations
Research by scientists at the Australian Institute for Marine Science (AIMS) discover that food fishery harvest may negatively impact the abundance of coral-eating Crown-of-Thorns Starfish, a “major contributor to coral loss when found in large numbers.”

Killer Solution for Coral Reef Killer
An Australia-based team of marine scientists has developed what may prove an effective control for the dreaded Crown of Thorns starfish (COTS), which periodically ravages coral reefs across the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Great Barrier Reef Losing Coral Cover
“The study shows the Reef has lost more than half its coral cover in 27 years. If the trend continued coral cover could halve again by 2022. Interestingly, the pattern of decline varies among regions. In the northern Great Barrier Reef coral cover has remained relatively stable, whereas in the southern regions we see the most dramatic loss of coral, particularly over the last decade when storms have devastated many reefs. ” says Peter Doherty.
