The seldom-seen and elusive deepwater Glass Octopus, Vitreledonella richardi, has been encountered and filmed by biologists exploring the depths off the remote Phoenix Islands, an archipelago 3,200 miles (5,100 km) northeast of Sydney, Australia. The expedition was funded by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, a non-profit co-founded by Wendy and Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO.
